Hong Kong in 1997 was an amazing period in history – a time of tension, street protests and historical events and ceremonies.
This photo documentary series by John Ridley captures this unique time in history.
Photographer John Ridley lived in 香港 Hong Kong from 1992 to 2000 and during the final year of British rule from 1 July 1996 to 1 July 1997. He documented the state of the Territory in black and white photographs. The images capture daily life in the territory, as well as some of the historical events leading to the handover ceremony at the Tamar barracks in Admiralty District Hong Kong on the night of the 1st July 1997.
20 years on, this collection of over 500 images represents an historical collection of photographs of this tumultuous period in the history of the Territory. John has selected 28 of his favourite images to showcase in this exhibition.
This first showing of any of these images will be held in Sydney at the Art Space on the Concourse in Chatswood from the 28th June to the 9th July.
I am offering a number of limited-item rewards that you can purchase here, including a poster, postcards, hard cover book, unique prints, a private showing, and opening night tickets. Your support is appreciated in getting this exhibition up.
Kind regards,
John Ridley
Thanks to everyone that has shown interest in my exhibition. Just over 500 people viewed the exhibition between 28th June and 9th July. I met some amazing people whose lives were impacted by the events in Hong Kong in 1997. 1997 has affected so many lives and families remain separated to this day.
I plan to move the exhibition to another venue either in Sydney or in Melbourne. If you are interested in the framed prints just drop me a line at john@c-logic.org
this campaign will close at the end of July,
many thanks,
john

Selenium toning now finshed and the prints are looking fabulous, thanks again to Chris Reid at Blanco Negro for an amazing job.
Silver gelatin Black and White Prints coming along fabulously thanks to Chris Reid at Blanco Negro. It has been great to see this man at work, passionately going about his art with an uncompromisng eye for detail and quality.
Started working with Chris Reid at Blanco Negro (Sydney) to prepare the prints for this up and coming exhibition. It is great to see Chris at work, he is a great practitioner in the art of traditional black and white enlargement and printing. Chris is meticulous in his care and attention to detail and uses silver gelatin fine art printing for added quality and archival protection of prints. For more information see: www.blanconegro.com.au
Almost 20 years now to the day that I was lucky enough to witness the handover of Hong Kong. When you look at the world today this moment was not only historically monumental but carried out peacefully with class and dignity. It wasn't of course what everyone wanted, but it was the agreement that Britain and China agreed to in the 99 year old lease on what was then the New Territories.
Leading up to the handover I embarked on a black and white photography project, recording life in the Territory in the final year of British rule. With a traditional range finder camera and rolls of film no less. In the end i took about 30 rolls of film and photographed many different aspects of Hong Kong life. I was of course drawn to the street marches and demonstrations leading to the handover itself. A sense of anxiety and fear was gripping Hong Kong and everyone could feel it.
Now in Sydney 20 years on I decided now was the time to dig out the old negatives and plan an exhibition. Many Hong Kong people now reside in Sydney and it will be very interesting to see how the exhibition is received. I'm crowd funding it now to help with the development and framing costs - www.readyfundgo.com/project/hong-kong-handover-ridley/. The exhibition itself runs from June 28th to 9th July 2017 at the Arts Space on the Concourse Chatswood, Sydney. More photos from my travels in Asia and beyond can be found at www.ridleyphotography.org
thanks again to early supporters, we are seeking a sponsor to really ignite the campaign, if you have a company or local business in Chatswood - let them know of the campaign at ReadyFundGo, lets make this a stand out community event!!
thanks for the early support, lots of planning to do and negatives to develop,
i hope this exhibition will be a significant community event,
best regards,
john
